I thought of Ethera when a colleague forwarded me a thought leadership essay by Danyel Arenas, co-founder and CEO of KiiChain, arguing for the inevitability of "on-chain foreign exchange." The piece has been circulating through stablecoin and payments circles. Both are genuinely significant. Visa's entry signals that stablecoins have migrated from subculture to institutional agenda. Brazil's guidance signals that a major emerging market treats stablecoins as a financial instrument with real-world exchange implications. Together, they frame a moment where stablecoin payments are no longer a debating point but an operational reality.

Arenas builds his argument on that foundation. The thesis is simple and largely persuasive: as stablecoin payments become mainstream, the bottleneck shifts from "sending value" to "converting value." A payment service provider in Latin America can receive USDC from a U.S. partner in seconds. But converting that USDC to Brazilian real or Mexican peso still runs through the old rails โ€” exchanges, spread, banking hours, settlement cycles, correspondent bank queues. The article argues that the next wave of stablecoin infrastructure must solve this "last exchange mile," and that the solution is a blockchain-based foreign exchange layer โ€” on-chain FX.

The appeal is obvious. Twenty-four-seven availability. Settlement in minutes rather than days. A single integration point for service providers managing multiple exchange relationships. Costs that might eventually rival the correspondent banking system's punitive fee structure.

It's a compelling pitch. Which is precisely why I decided to read it three times, slowly, looking for the load-bearing details โ€” and finding mostly empty space.


Let me be fair to the article before I scrutinize it. The demand-side analysis is not fictional. They want a magic layer that solves currency conversion so they can build better products.

But here is where the logic begins to fracture โ€” quietly, politely, but indisputably.

The global foreign exchange market clears roughly seven and a half trillion dollars per day. That is the Bank for International Settlements estimate, the number that dominates any serious discussion of currency markets. The entire stablecoin economy โ€” all issuers, all chains, all markets โ€” operates at a scale smaller by orders of magnitude. Even on days when stablecoin trading volume spikes into the tens of billions, that remains a rounding error against the institutional FX market.

This is not an argument against on-chain FX. It is an argument against the implicit claim that blockchain infrastructure can become the FX market's rival in the foreseeable future. What on-chain FX can realistically serve is a specific, valuable sliver: the emerging market corridors where correspondent banking costs are punitive, where three to five percent fees, banking-day delays, and minimum transfer sizes make formal rails unusable for small and medium-sized payments. That sliver is real, and it is worth serving. But it is not the seven and a half trillion dollar market the narrative gestures toward.

Serving that sliver requires its own economics. Market makers do not provide liquidity because they believe in the mission. They provide it because the spread, the volume, and the inventory risk equation works in their favor. In a corridor like USD to Brazilian real, the volumes might justify a quote. In a corridor like Colombian peso to Argentine peso, the volumes will not. The long tail of currency corridors โ€” the places where the article's inclusive vision matters most โ€” lacks the order flow to attract meaningful market making.

The article explicitly acknowledges that making more local currencies available on-chain does not solve the underlying exchange problem. It is almost the sharpest sentence in the essay. But the author stops short of asking the obvious follow-up: where does the liquidity come from? What incentive design ensures a market maker quotes a fair price on an Argentine peso corridor at two in the morning Sรฃo Paulo time, on a Saturday, for ten thousand dollars of order flow?

No discussion of how a protocol, or the humans running it, would reconcile a 24/7 permissionless liquidity pool with the iron reality of financial recordkeeping.

Let me be precise about the implication. If on-chain FX is permissioned โ€” with licensed liquidity providers, screened users, and monitored transactions โ€” then what makes it meaningfully on-chain? You have built a regulated exchange with a blockchain ledger. That is a legitimate product. It is not, however, the open, decentralized future the article gestures toward.

If on-chain FX is truly permissionless and open โ€” anyone can connect, any wallet can trade, no gatekeeping โ€” then it is structurally incompatible with every serious regulatory regime on earth. The article treats this tension as invisible. In reality, it is the entire ballgame.

I recall my 2020 work with Aragon, redesigning governance templates to increase participation. The insight that emerged was simple: governance is not a feature; it is an accessibility layer. If people cannot understand a proposal, they will not vote. If they cannot trust the process, they will not participate. The same logic applies with multiplied force to financial infrastructure. I want to be careful here. Thought leadership pieces are a genre, and they do not typically include architecture diagrams. But this article was not written by a neutral observer. It was published by a CEO whose company is presumably building in this exact space. When a founder publishes a vision essay without any technical grounding, the omission reads not as editorial brevity but as pre-product narrative formation. The goal is to establish the mental container โ€” on-chain FX is inevitable, and it requires dedicated infrastructure โ€” before the technical disclosure arrives.

That is a legitimate strategy. It is also a maturity signal. And I have seen it play out before. Ethera had a website, a roadmap, and a community. What it lacked was a credible technical substrate. The narrative ran ahead of the engineering by a significant margin. I published the audit not because I doubted the team's intentions but because I doubted their readiness. The KiiChain essay evokes a similar instinct.


There is also a claim I want to interrogate directly: that Visa's Stablecoin Platform validates the on-chain FX direction. I read Visa's move differently.

Visa is not endorsing open, permissionless finance. Visa is building defensive infrastructure. Its threat model is straightforward: if stablecoins are going to be the native settlement mechanism for global payments, Visa risks being disintermediated โ€” bypassed, reduced to a relic of the card era. The Stablecoin Platform is a cybernetic countermeasure: Visa becomes the layer that manages stablecoin issuance and settlement for its banking clients, preserving its position at the center of the payments universe.

If this reading is correct, then Visa's platform is not a tailwind for open on-chain FX infrastructure. It is the opposite. It is a signal that the most powerful institution in the payments space intends to own the stablecoin settlement layer โ€” and to do so within the existing financial regulatory framework, not outside it. Visa does not need a decentralized protocol for currency conversion. It has SWIFT, correspondent banking relationships, fifteen thousand financial institution clients, and decades of regulatory entrenchment.

Open source is not a license; it is a covenant. I believe that. But a ledger that is open in protocol and closed in governance is a different covenant entirely. And a payment infrastructure that is open but unlicensed is not a covenant at all โ€” it is a liability.

The article's competitive map is similarly one-sided. It does not mention SWIFT's partnership with Chainlink to test tokenized settlement for bank-to-bank transfers. It does not mention JP Morgan's Onyx or the broader trend of traditional financial institutions building their own tokenized settlement infrastructure. It does not mention that Circle and PayPal are building their own stablecoin rails. The narrative presents the field as "Visa has validated stablecoins" and concludes therefore that a new open-facing FX chain is the missing piece. But the actual competitive landscape is crowded: traditional market infrastructure, stablecoin issuers, and crypto-native protocols are all converging on the same problem.


Now the most pragmatic detail the article never mentions: the token.

KiiChain's name implies it is โ€” or intends to be โ€” a blockchain. Blockchains have tokens. But the article says nothing: no issuance schedule, no distribution model, no governance design, no market maker incentive structure, no liquidity provider compensation, no mention of whether the token would exist as a staking asset, a fee asset, a governance asset, or all three.

For a project building financial infrastructure, the token model is not a footnote. It is a structural determinant. The economics of on-chain FX resolve differently depending on whether the protocol charges spread, whether market makers are subsidized, whether liquidity providers stake native tokens, whether governance has authority over oracle lists or emergency parameters. The article's silence on these questions is not neutral. It is a decision.

Maybe the project is early-stage. Maybe it is avoiding token discourse for regulatory reasons. Maybe tokens are irrelevant to the eventual product. But when a CEO publishes a vision essay without addressing the economic backbone of the proposed network, the absence communicates something. Especially to the audience that actually reads these pieces: venture capitalists, ecosystem builders, and potential partners evaluating whether to commit capital and credibility.

Let me connect one more thread. The article's vision โ€” where the service provider just sends and receives currencies, and the infrastructure handles everything else โ€” requires someone to be on the other side of every trade. Someone must hold inventory in Brazilian real. Someone must price the risk on a Colombian peso position overnight. Someone must absorb the loss when a corridor dries up or a market maker withdraws its quotes.

In traditional FX, that someone is a bank with a balance sheet, licensed and capitalized by regulators. In the on-chain vision, that someone is unnamed. The article does not say whether KiiChain itself will be the liquidity provider, whether it will rely on external market makers, whether it will build a dedicated treasury pool, or whether it has secured institutional partners to backstop inventory risk.

This omission is not an oversight. It is the core of the matter. A foreign exchange infrastructure is a promise that there is always a counterparty to complete the exchange. And the counterparty who makes that promise, in the traditional world, is a license-holding, capital-cushioned institution. The article proposes moving the ledger on-chain while leaving the question of the counterparty โ€” its licenses, its capital, its risk appetite โ€” completely unaddressed.

Consider also the timing. The article arrives in a market that is searching for the next narrative after the stablecoin payments story has matured. It is not a project disclosure; it is market education. The essay is doing the work of framing the problem space for investors, potential partners, and regulators. That is a valid contribution. But it is a contribution to narrative formation, not to technical knowledge. Readers should treat it as such: as an invitation to consider a thesis, not as evidence of a working system.


Here is the counter-intuitive angle I keep circling back to: the most likely winners of the on-chain FX era are not the on-chain FX chains at all. They are the stablecoin issuers and licensed payment companies that already hold the liquidity and regulatory clearances that the infrastructure narrative assumes can be built from scratch.

Circle is the most obvious example. USDC is already the default dollar-denominated asset for this kind of settlement. Circle holds licenses in the United States and the European Union. It has built a payments cloud and B2B rails that do, in real terms, what the on-chain FX vision describes. When the article says a payment service provider should never need to worry about where liquidity comes from, it is describing a product that Circle can deliver without inventing a new chain. It is describing a product that PayPal, Stripe, and a dozen licensed fintechs can also deliver by integrating with existing stablecoin rails and licensed exchanges.

This matters because the article's own framing gives the game away. If the ideal service provider experience is "plug in and receive converted currency, do not worry about the rest," then the ultimate deliverable is a product, not a protocol. Products are built by whoever can integrate, license, and distribute โ€” advantages that accrue to incumbents with balance sheets and regulatory relationships.

I have to be honest about an uncomfortable tension in my own thinking. I have built my career on open source, on decentralized networks, on the belief that permissionless infrastructure is a meaningful force for equity and inclusion. I still believe this. And yet, the deeper I go into financial infrastructure โ€” into the last exchange mile, into the regulatory classification of stablecoins, into the capital requirements for market making โ€” the more I suspect that the decentralized revolution in money is going to look less like a public forest and more like a public park: open to everyone, maintained by institutions, with rules.

Let me also raise an uncomfortable question about the counterparty of this entire narrative: the banks. The article's implicit argument is that on-chain FX will bypass the correspondent banking system. But the banks are not passive observers. They hold the licenses, they hold the client relationships, and they hold the regulatory goodwill that the crypto industry still needs. It is far more likely that banks adopt stablecoin settlement internally โ€” as JP Morgan has done with its own tokenized settlement experiments โ€” than that they allow a new open protocol to disintermediate the very settlement layer they profit from. The path of least resistance for stablecoin payments runs through the existing banking system via licensed, compliant fintechs, not around it.

There is one segment that is an unambiguous beneficiary of on-chain FX infrastructure regardless of who builds it: DeFi. Stablecoin spot pairs, foreign exchange derivatives, interest rate swaps, and collateralized lending all become richer if genuine fiat-currency representation exists on-chain. The composability of protocols means that an FX layer sits neatly alongside lending markets and synthetic asset designs. But โ€” and this is the critical distinction the article misses โ€” DeFi's capacity to benefit from on-chain FX depends on whether the underlying infrastructure is permissionless enough to be composed with. A licensed, permissioned settlement network is not composable in the same way. The same regulatory requirements that make it safe also make it closed.

I keep returning to a phrase that has anchored my writing for years: Faith in the fork, hope in the merge. The fork creates possibility; the merge reconciles it with the world. For on-chain FX to produce anything real, it must merge with the regulatory reality that begins with the words "get a license." That is not surrender. It is the path to survival.


I have been writing at the intersection of values and technology for over a decade. The pattern I have observed, from ICOs to algorithmic stablecoins to now the on-chain FX narrative, is consistent: a beautiful vision arrives, presenting the disappearance of friction as the achievement of justice, and only later do the questions of substance arrive โ€” in smaller print, often in the footnotes of a failure report.

The on-chain FX thesis is not wrong. It is incomplete. The bottleneck is real. The demand for 24/7 settlement is real. The frustration of the Sรฃo Paulo merchant is real. But the infrastructure that solves this problem will have to answer the questions this article avoids: who holds the inventory, who holds the license, who holds the counterparty risk, and who holds the keys when a corridor fails.

Silence in the ledger speaks louder than code. Listen to what the repository refuses to say โ€” it often contains the most important design decisions. The future of foreign exchange is on-chain, I am quite sure of that. But on-chain already means many things โ€” permissioned and permissionless, licensed and unlicensed, institutional and individual. The difference between infrastructure and illusion is not the blockchain. It is the work that happens before the first block is signed: the licenses, the capital, the compliance layer, the market maker agreements, the honest admission of who bears the risk.

I will be watching for those details with the same attention I gave the Ethera distribution schedule. The narrative will carry the industry for a season. The details will decide whether it survives the winter.
