Tether's KPMG Audit: A Single Point of Trust in a System That Needs Continuous Proof

0xAlex
KPMG signed off on Tether’s 2025 books with an unqualified opinion. The report is not public. That gap is the story. Tether finally did it. After eight years of promises, regulatory fines, and a long trail of 'audit soon' statements, the largest stablecoin issuer announced that KPMG completed a full audit of its 2025 financial statements. The opinion was unqualified — the strongest grade an auditor can give. CEO Paolo Ardoino framed it as vindication. CFO Simon McWilliams called it 'one of the most ambitious projects in the company’s history.' Let’s verify the proof, ignore the hype. I’ve spent the last decade auditing smart contracts and modeling systemic risk in DeFi. I know what a single-point-in-time verification means — and what it doesn’t. First, the context. Tether now holds over $180 billion in USDT in circulation. The GENIUS Act, passed in 2025, requires any stablecoin issuer with over $50 billion in market cap to submit to an annual audit by a registered public accounting firm. Tether qualifies. So this audit is not optional — it’s a compliance milestone. The previous quarterly 'attestations' performed by BDO Italia only covered a single day’s reserves and liabilities. They were not full audits. This is the first time a Big Four firm has done a balance-sheet audit with procedures that include physically counting gold bars, verifying ownership records, and testing counterparty transactions. Now, the core analysis. KPMG examined Tether’s systems, transaction logs, asset valuations, and counterparty documentation. They also conducted a physical count of every gold bar Tether claims to hold. That is a significant step up from the old 'agreed-upon procedures' reports. The 2025 financial statements show reserves exceeding liabilities by $6.814 billion. That translates to a reserve coverage ratio of roughly 103.8% — assuming the liabilities equal the face value of all USDT in circulation. That is a positive signal. Based on my experience auditing the Kyber Network smart contracts in 2017, I know that manual verification catches what automated scanners miss. But there is a critical difference: in that case, I could reproduce the vulnerability. Here, I cannot reproduce KPMG’s work. The audit report is not public. External researchers have no way to independently verify the methodology, the sampling, or the assumptions. That is a fundamental transparency gap. Let’s stress-test the numbers. In my 2020 DeFi composability stress test, I ran 10,000 Monte Carlo simulations on MakerDAO’s liquidation cascades. The key insight was that excess collateral does not prevent a liquidity crisis if the assets are illiquid. Tether’s $6.8 billion in excess reserves sounds like a buffer, but we do not know the composition. If a significant portion is in physical gold or commercial paper, a sudden redemption wave could amplify selling pressure. The audit covers a single point — December 31, 2025 — not a continuous state. The real risk is not the snapshot; it’s the months between snapshots. Code is law, but bugs are reality. Here, the code is off-chain, and the reality is we have to trust KPMG’s brand. The contrarian angle is that this audit, while positive, introduces a new set of blind spots. First, the report is not public, so the market operates on a press release. If the report contains key audit matters or management commentary, Tether is selectively withholding it. Second, the audit does not change Tether’s governance — it remains a centralized entity with full control over asset allocation and redemption policies. Third, the audit covers only one fiscal year. It does not guarantee that Tether’s reserves are adequate today, nor does it prevent future lapses. In my 2024 analysis of Bitcoin ETF custody, I found that institutional compliance often masks operational fragility. The KPMG audit is a compliance tool, but it does not make Tether’s reserves transparent in real time. The market still relies on quarterly attestations — which are not audited — for updates. The gap between audit frequency and the speed of a bank run is the real vulnerability. Takeaway: Tether’s KPMG audit reduces one systemic risk — the uncertainty about reserve existence at a single point — but creates a new one: the expectation of transparency without the actual delivery. If the report remains hidden, the narrative will shift from 'victory' to 'what are they hiding.' The next six months will tell us whether this audit is the beginning of a new transparency regime or just another chapter in the same old story. Will Tether publish the full report, or will this be another broken promise?
